The Best Mini Dutch Apple Pies

These mini apple pies with brown sugar butter topping is something you have to make this winter season. The apple is perfectly spiced with a tart bite of Granny Smith apple and cinnamon sugar. The streusel topping is to die for, do not skip that step!

The brown sugar crumble (streusel) topping is the show stopper!
The crunch from the topping balances out the soft sweet apple filling. The way the sugars caramelize is what makes these mini pies worth the time to make. It’s a simple apple recipe that people will ask you to make over and over again!

Mini Dutch Apple Pie

Ingredients
  

  • 12 mini pastry pie shells

Apple Filling

  • 2 cups diced apple
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tbs cornstarch
  • 1 tbs water

Dutch Crunch Topping

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbs white sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon *optional

Instructions
 

  • Pre heat oven to 400F and prepare baking sheet with liner to catch the hot sugar (it's very sticky).

Apple Filling

  • Prepare apples by removing peel and cut into small diced pieces.
  • In a sauce pan add butter, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon over medium heat until butter has melted.
  • Add apples and water.
  • In a small bowl or mug combine the cornstarch and water. Add to the pot, keep stirring and continue to cook until apples are soft but not mushy.
  • Once the filling starts thickening, let bubble for 60 seconds and remove from heat. Let cool.

Dutch Crunch Topping

  • In medium bowl mix butter, flour and brown sugar until a little crumb or balls forms.

Assembling the Tarts

  • Place a large spoonful of apple filling mixture into each pie shell. Do not over fill, fill just to under the edge.
  • Add crumble mixture evenly over top of each pie shell. Add a lot of topping because it melts down.
  • Place pie shells on baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and just bubbling slightly alone the edges.
  • Remove and let cool.

Notes

You can skip the topping and they are still going to be very delicious and a little more healthy. 
Drizzle with caramel if you have it!
You can make a full size pie out of this recipe. Cook for 40 – 45 minutes until golden and bubbly.
